From book launches for the Solent English Collective and its collaborative student-community projects to graduation ceremonies and visits to the UK Parliament, students have been at the centre of my world and an awful lot of them know about widows now because of their willingness to listen to me talk about them. Two students even chose the role of the widow as the focus for their dissertation topic. Wherever I go, I’m always looking at how widows (whether real or fictional) are discussed and represented. And I never cease to be amazed at what I find.
